Did you know the best anti-ageing product you can use on your skin is sunscreen?

Chronologically we are all ageing, however it's the damage from the sunlight and UV rays that is accelerating this ageing in our skin.

Wrinkles, fine lines and pigmentation are inevitable skin concerns that often appear as we age and around 90% of the visible changes we see happen due to direct exposure to the sun and daylight.

It is a known fact that daylight is around us all the time and this means the damage that is getting done to our skin is constant - not only from an ageing perspective but from a potential skin cancer risk too! The best step to prevent skin damage is to use an SPF product every single day of the year. Regardless of the weather, the season, or of you being indoors or outdoors - SPF is a must at all times!

What is UV?

UV radiation is a type of energy that is produced by the sun. You can see the light and you can feel the heat from the sun, but the radiation is invisible to us. The radiation reaches our skin without us realising and we won't see the damage until it's been done.

UV radiation comes in 2 mains forms - UVA and UVB radiation

1. UVA Radiation

These rays give you a 'sun tan'. They are longer wavelength, penetrate deeper into the skin and target the DNA of the skin cells. It also means the rays are targeting our most precious structures - collagen and elastin. They are responsible for much of the damage we associate with photoageing.

2. UVB Radiation

UVB rays are shorter than UVA rays. They target the skin cells at the surface and are the main culprit behind sunburn. This can result is redness, pain and discomfort and peeling of the skin, not to mention the damage that has been done to our skin cells. UVB rays are also the biggest culprit in the formation of skin cancers!

Besides simply adding sunscreen on a daily basis, it's important to think of sun safety as a whole.

Let's remind ourselves of the THE FIVE S's OF SUN SAFETY from the Cancer Council:

  • SLIP on a t-shirt.
  • SLOP on SPF 30+ broad spectrum UVA sunscreen
  • SLAP on a broad brimmed hat.
  • SLIDE on quality sunglasses.
  • SHADE from the sun whenever possible.
