As UV levels begin to increase day to day, it is so important that we protect our skin . These rays can burn our skin and potentially give us skin cancer as well as age our skin faster than anything else! Today's blog is about educating you on solar UV exposure, sun protection and how Dermalogica can really make a difference with your skin.

How does solar UV exposure change throughout the year?

Solar UV exposure changes all through the year depending on the seasons. Exposure levels are the highest in the summer months, from December to February. And they are the lowest during the winter months from May through to July. Interestingly, during Spring and Autumn solar UV exposure level can change rapidly day to day. This is why it is so important that we protect our skin using sunscreen during the day, even during Spring.

Where did Sunscreen come from?

Sunscreen has been around for over 50 years. When they were originally created, the purpose was to prevent sunburn. And what causes sunburn? UVB. The cosmetic industry created UVB absorbers and so people were able to apply this product and not get burnt. But, it was the UVA rays that were longer, and penetrate deeper, so people were still getting skin cancer and skin ageing because they were missing half the spectrum.
Sunscreens are not antioxidants, that is not how they work. They absorb UV energy and change it to heat energy before it causes skin problems, using chemical blockers like Oxybenzone and Avobenzone. A lot of people don't apply sunscreen correctly and they don't apply enough to the skin.

With the Dermalogica UV Smart Booster Technology, it can actively diffuse free radicals when protection against them is needed most. The powerful vitamin complex, when formulated with sunscreens, also provides enhanced protection against UV-induced damage without the need for higher concentrations of potentially-irritating sunscreen ingredients found in products with high sun protection factors (SPF).

What is the difference between a store bought SPF and a professional SPF?

The Dermalogica UV Smart Booster Technology and sophisticated sunscreen formulations with skin health benefits make SPF a convenient addition to every morning routine.

Our Skin is an excellent record keeper

Every moment of exposure to daylight adds up like money in the bank. Statistics show that one in six individuals will develop skin cancer, and 90% of these cancers are the direct results of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Even if exposure is limited to brief outdoor lunches or a 20-minute walk, cumulative exposure is enough to cause the signs of skin ageing and increase the risk of skin cancer.
