Our skin is exposed to many internal and external factors that contribute to how gracefully our skin ages. We all want our skin to look its best and here are my 10 tips to slow down the ageing of our skin.

1. Apply SPF every single day

This is your best anti-ageing product as it will protect you against the damage caused by UVA and UVB rays. UVA breaks down our support structures- Collagen, Elastin and Hyaluronic Acid so to slow down the sagging and wrinkles, protect your skin with a good SPF. UVB causes burning to our skin and depending on where you live, will depend on the intensity of these however usually between 11am-2pm are the peace burning times during the day. If you need advice as to which SPF product is best for you, we are here to help - you can book a complimentary video consultation and talk to one of our skin therapists face 2 face!

2. Cleanse your skin at night- Always!

While we sleep, our skin repairs and rejuvenates itself and to give our skin the best opportunity for this, we must cleanse our skin at night. Not once, but twice! Double cleansing your skin will ensure your skin is left thoroughly cleaned and ready for your night time routine. Follow with your recommended home care products so that your skin concerns are targeted while you watch the pillow show

3. Keep your diet healthy

Treat your body with kindness and your skin will show the benefits! Opt for fruit and veggies that are rich in antioxidants and healthy omega oils that all will provide optimal nutrient levels for the body. We all know that a well balanced diet is the key to keeping healthy - but how does this help the skin?

When we consume certain foods that contain healthy oils and omega-3 fatty acids, we are helping support the collagen in our skin and keeping it smooth and supple - this will help prevent the speed up of wrinkles and skin sagging occurring. Limit refined sugar intake - Excess processed sugars in your diet can cause dehydration, wrinkles, dark circles and fast-track ageing. Sugar attaches to our proteins (collagen and elastin) and they cause harmful free radical damage. Collagen and elastin keep our skin plump and supple and these free radicals then cause it to become brittle and weak which then leads to wrinkles and loss of elasticity and support. We often see an increase in breakouts too when sugar intake is high!

4. Keep the skin hydrated

One of the many comments I hear when talking to people about their skin is “I probably need to drink more water". And the answer will be “yes you may do, but that’s not all!”

Our skin is the largest organ in the body and unfortunately often the last place to get the water we drink. In saying this, when our water intake is at a great level, the cells of our body function at their optimum, this then means our organs are working efficiently. Combine this with a healthy and well balanced diet and we are showing the love our body, and our skin deserve.

A good water intake helps flush out toxins, which can help the skin look clearer, our eyes brighter and our bodies less fatigued (to name a few benefits). Targeting hydration from the skin first is also key! Hydration skin gives radiance and suppleness and helps keep oil flow in balance which is a key if you are prone to breakouts.

Hyaluronic acid is one of the 3 support structures in our skin (along with collagen and elastin) and unfortunately also naturally decreases as we age so incorporating a home care product with Hyaluronic acid will ensure our skin moisture remains at a good level. I recommend using at least one home care product that targets the hydration on your skin.

My absolute favourite product in the Dermalogica range is the Skin Hydrating Booster and this has been in my home care routine everyday since I started working with the Dermalogica products…17 years ago!!

5. Keep up the exercise

Exercising is a great way to get the circulation going in our bodies. When our circulation is stimulated, the nutrients and oxygen are carried through our blood more effectively and this results in a healthy glow and a plump complexion. If you need to work out with make-up on, make sure its light weight and non clogging and best to cleanse and apply your home care products afterwards too. Also keep your hair tied up to prevent excess sweat and oils creeping down to the face and make sure always that you have your SPF on when exercising outdoors

6. Opt for skincare with Peptides

Peptides are the building blocks that make protein and the most important protein we have in our skin is Collagen! From the age of 30, we naturally lose 1% of collagen every year and add things like stress, our hormones and the environment for example, we then see a speed up of this collagen loss. Peptides are advanced ingredients that help slow down the ageing process and keep that collagen supple and youthful. It's never too early to start!

Dermalogica's most advanced, dual-phase serum combines highly-active botanicals with biomimetic technology to reduce visible signs of skin ageing and reawakens the nature of younger looking skin. It doubles skin's luminosity and minimises the appearance of fine line in just 1 application,. Plus, it reduces visible wrinkles after 4 weeks.

7. Exfoliate regularly

This is a favourite step in many people's home care routine. Why? Because we love the smooth feeling it gives us afterwards. But that’s not all exfoliation does for our skin. Here are 4 key areas that are targeted when you exfoliate your skin on a regular basis:

  • Evens out skin texture by removing dry dead skin cells leaving it smooth and soft
  • Reveals a more brighter skin complexion as dead skin cells can create a dull appearance on the skin
  • Helps remove impurities from the skin which can find themselves trapped in our follicles and this can lead to an increase in congestion, blackheads and breakouts
  • Gives the skin a more youthful appearance as healthy skin cells provide a healthy glow to the skin

8. Manage stress effectively

This is certainly a word that is used so much in our daily life these days and ’stress’ can come to us in any different forms and at a different levels. As individuals, we all manage our stress so differently. The effects of our stress can show up on our skin from our ’stressed’ facial expressions too painful breakouts and there are changes happening underneath our skin too.

Our skin needs support when these changes happen and we need to adjust our home care routine accordingly. The NEW Dermalogica Retinol Clearing Oil is a high-performance night oil that targets breakouts and visible signs of premature skin ageing at the same time. Combining Retinol and Salicylic Acid into one skin-soothing formula to renew and soothe skin overnight to deliver clearer, more vibrant skin by morning.

9. Use a Vitamin C product

A buzz word out there and hands down, Dermalogica's Biolumin C Serum is my hero Vitamin C product in my skin care routine because of the visible changes I see in my skin. Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant and topically applying this to the skin means the skin will reap all its benefits.

Here is what Vitamin C will help with on the skin:

  • Hydrates by helping the skin retain moisture
  • Brightens and leaves the skin with a youthful glow
  • Boosts collagen production, slowing down the onset of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Even skin tone by helping to obstruct the production of pigmentation
  • Calms sensitivity and this helps to give a more even skin complexion
  • Protects against sun damage as it assists our SPF in protecting the skin the harmful UVA and UVB rays
