  • Skin Smoothing Cream, What you love now with more

Skin Smoothing Cream is our #1 moisturiser for a reason!

As one of the first products launched by Dermalogica, Skin Smoothing Cream has certainly stood the test of time. Since the 1980's our lives and environment have changed, together with dermalogica's developments in skincare technology the timing is perfect to update this favourite and we are excited to share with you why!

    When is this happening?

New Skin Smoothing Cream with HydraMesh Technology begins sale on the 5th October. The new formulation will be for the first time available for sale in 3 sizes (100ml, 50ml and new 15ml trial size).

    What has changed?

The average adult loses nearly half a litre of moisture through Trans-Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL) every day, making continuous hydration an essential component of overall skin health. But between increasing environmental triggers and ever-busier lifestyles, today’s moisturisers need to do more than just replace lost hydration. Dehydration also disrupts the skin’s microbiome and accelerates the loss of crucial enzymes – so we made it our mission to harness advanced hydration technologies into a next-generation formula for our best-selling moisturiser.

Dermalogica’s Skin Smoothing Cream is now upgraded with the latest technology to feature state-of-the-art Active HydraMesh Technology, which works on a molecular level to help reduce TEWL and infuse skin with 48 hours of continuous hydration. This advanced technology also helps shield skin’s natural microbiome from environmental stress.

    The Details on Hydration

Proper hydration is central to skin health. The skin has its own Natural Moisturising Factor (NMF). This is the collective name for a group of molecules that help retain moisture in the skin. Hydration can also come from topically applied skin care products, the water you drink throughout the day, and your diet. Likewise, lifestyle can have a big impact on skin’s hydration levels: environmental factors, stress, and even the weather can significantly deplete skin’s hydration reserves.

The result of this depletion is dehydrated skin. It can affect anyone, and can appear as fine lines, dryness and tightness – and one of the biggest consequences of dehydrated skin is an increase in sensitivity. Regardless of the symptoms, the solution is providing continual hydration to keep skin dehydration at bay.

Why is the Lipid Barrier important?

Found in the outermost layer of the epidermis – the stratum corneum – lipids are the “mortar” in the skin structure that form a protective barrier from the outside world, helping to keep irritants out. The lipid barrier plays a crucial role in managing skin’s moisture levels by stopping water loss and preventing extreme dryness.

When the lipid barrier is impaired or slow in replenishing itself, this protective barrier is compromised – which can result in dehydration and increased sensitivity.

    What is the Microbiome?

The skin hosts a wide array of organisms that comprise its microbiome (natural microbial ecosystem). Traditionally we tend to think of most bacteria as “bad”, but the skin microbiome plays an important role in some of the skin’s key processes. In terms of cell turnover, the microbiome helps regulate skin’s pH – which is vital for the function of crucial enzymes. It’s also a key part of the immune system, and physically blocks “bad” bacteria from the skin.

Research is ongoing, but we’re now starting to understand the positive impact that certain bacteria within the skin’s microbiome can have on skin health. Therefore, by influencing the microbiome, we can influence the overall health of the skin.

  • Your Number 1 Anti-Wrinkle Essential; Sunscreen!

Protect against wrinkles and sun spots with SPF Protect against wrinkles and sun spots with SPF

We’re all aware of the importance of sunscreen, especially when you live somewhere like Australia, but along with protecting against skin cancer, sunscreen is your go-to, number one, age fighter. UV rays are the biggest cause of lines and wrinkles, so it’s a no brainer that protecting against these harmful rays is your best shot at preventing against accelerated skin ageing.

So, what exactly is an SPF?

Sun protection factor (SPF) or sunscreen protects the skin from UVB rays, the kind of radiation that causes sunburn, damages skin, and can contribute to skin cancer. A broad-spectrum sunscreen however, protects from UVA rays as well as UVB, and it’s the UVA rays you really need to worry about where skin ageing is concerned. Being the longest rays in the spectrum, UVA rays penetrate to the deeper layers of the skin, causing damage to our collagen and elastin and like UVB rays, UVA rays are also linked to skin cancer. UVA is the culprit for much of our visible skin ageing; from wrinkles, sagging skin to uneven skin tone and sun spots.

In terms of your options, there are two different types of sunscreen: either a chemical or physical sunscreen. Both are equally effective, they just work differently. For example, a chemical sunscreen absorbs UV light, whilst a physical sunscreen mainly reflects it. Think of a chemical sunscreen like sponges, mopping up the UV radiation, and a physical sunscreen like a mirror, bouncing UV straight back off the skin. It really comes down to personal preference with which type you choose to use. However, those with more sensitive skins tend to prefer a physical sunscreen as they seem to tolerate the physical UV screening agents over the chemical ones.

What should I look for in my sunscreen?

Protection Sport SPF50 Protection Sport SPF50

Good sunscreens today are more than a cream with an SPF factor; they are advanced treatment products that enhance the appearance and quality of the skin. A good sunscreen should always be broad spectrum, contain antioxidants to fight free radical damage, and be free from artificial fragrance. Also look out for sunscreens that are ‘non-comedogenic’, which essentially means they won’t clog pores or cause breakouts. If you’re an oiler skin then you should definitely look for a guaranteed ‘non-comedogenic’ sunscreen, and ideally one that’s oil-free.

Board SPF protection features in multiple Dermalogica's products, from primers to moisturisers, along with standalone sunscreens, making it easy to incorporate sun protection into your regimen.

    Protection, Protection, Protection

As sunscreen is fundamental to skin health, you need to be diligent with your application. It’s a common misconception that sunscreen products are designed for use solely in the hotter months. However, given UVA rays are present at the same intensity all year round, sunscreen needs to be a daily habit.

It’s recommended applying sun screen at least 30 minutes before going outdoors, as this allows adequate time for the product to penetrate the surface of the skin. In terms of how much, Australia’s Cancer Council advise using half a teaspoon for the face and neck – including the ears and the back of the neck. For the (average) body, we need about a golf ball size amount of product or at least six teaspoonfuls. And don’t forget to reapply! Sunscreen only protects for a limited time, so slip, slop and slap it back on regularly and every two hours if your outdoors.

  • Why You Need SPF Everyday - Not Just at the Beach...

Did you know that two in three Australians are diagnosed with skin cancer by age 70? And that more than 2,000 people in Australia die from skin cancer each year?

The Cancer Council estimates that Australia spends more than $1 billion per year treating skin cancer but with some key protection methods we can prevent most skin cancers!

Most of us will remember the Slip, Slop, Slap message from years past... but now, coming up to National Skin Cancer Action Week, Australians of all ages are urged to  always use the five forms of sun protection. These are to:

SLIP on sun-protective clothing SLOP on SPF30 (or higher) broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen SLAP on a broad-brimmed hat SEEK shade SLIDE on UV protective sunglasses.

A combination of these measures, along with getting to know your skin and regularly checking for any changes, are the keys to reducing your skin cancer risk. For many Australians, applying daily sun protection is still not a ritual, even though there has been endless education and a plethora of products on the market.

Here, Ellie Douglas - Dermalogica Training Specialist helps us navigate the different SPF products available and discusses the importance of shielding against UV rays every day, not just when we're at the beach!

Busting the myth on sunscreen It’s a common misconception that sun protection factor (SPF) products are designed for use solely in the summer or hotter months. When the sun’s not beaming brightly, our sunscreen retires to the back of our bathroom cabinet, only to make its next appearance with the swimwear and sun hats, and by then it may have expired.

In reality, UVA rays are present at the same intensity all year round. Being the longest rays in the spectrum, they penetrate to the deeper layers of the skin causing damage to our collagen and elastin. UVA is the culprit for much of our visible skin ageing in the form of wrinkles, sagging skin, uneven skin tone and sun spots. Other signs of damage are the appearance of small blood vessels and spider veins on the face, neck and chest.

Don’t get a false sense of security when sitting in doors or when the weather is a dull, as UVA can penetrate unfiltered glass including some car windows. And don’t count on the clouds to protect you, as UVA is still active on cloudy days. They say, “prevention is better than cure”, and this phrase couldn’t be more fitting when talking about wearing sun protection. A daily dose of an SPF 30 - 50+ should be your number one product priority, to not only protect the skin, but prevent against the signs of premature ageing.

Out with greasy, in with invisible! There are some highly sophisticated sunscreen technologies available today. No longer do we have to be afraid of our SPF. It doesn’t have to feel greasy and suffocating on our skin. Not all sunscreens will clog the pores and cause breakouts and congestion. In fact, with the advances in some sunscreens today, you won’t even know that you’re wearing one. And as a bonus, your chosen sunscreen can even help firm, mattify and brighten your skin, depending on your individual skin goals and challenges.

Dermalogica uses two advanced technologies in its sunscreen formulations, making our fear of sunscreen a thing of the past…Let me introduce you to oleosomes and UV smart booster technology. Oleosomes are tiny moisturising bubbles that can be loaded with SPF. The result is a sunscreen that allows for increased SPF activity whilst using fewer chemical sunscreens and is therefore less likely to cause skin sensitivity. What’s more, these moisture rich oleosomes deliver a feather light, wearable consistency. Effective protection from harmful UV rays is a two pronged approach. Firstly, the rays must be either absorbed with chemical sun screens or reflected with physical sun screens. Secondly, the skin will benefit hugely from having a good dose of antioxidants to fight free radical damage caused by exposure to UV rays.

Dermalogica’s UV smart booster technology provides a fresh dose of encapsulated vitamins which are cleverly released only when they encounter UV rays. Once you’ve found a sunscreen that you’re happy with, the next part is applying it correctly.

Here are Ellie's top tips for optimum protection: - Apply ideally 30 minutes prior to sun exposure. - The Cancer Council of Australia’s guide to applying sun screen is half a teaspoon for the face, ears and front and back of neck. - Reapply your sunscreen every two hours. - Don’t forget bald heads, thinning scalps, the chest, arms and hands - they all need protecting too!

Selecting a sunscreen for your skin type and lifestyle Many of Dermalogica’s sunscreens are built into a moisturiser, so if you’re time poor these make a good option - just pick out one that’s best suited to your skin. But if you already love your daytime moisturiser, then consider a product like Solar Defense Booster SPF 50, this innovative sunscreen allows you to add a few drops to your moisturiser or even your foundation and get the protection you require.

Reactive and sensitive skin: Choose a physical sunscreen such as the Super Sensitive Shield SPF 30. This 2 in 1 moisturiser, formulated with natural mineral sunscreens, contains oat and botanical actives to help minimise any skin irritation.

Oily skin and breakouts: Use a medicated, oil free treatment moisturiser with an SPF 30+. We recommend Oil Free Matte SPF 30 from the MediBac Clearing system.

Fine line and wrinkles: It has to be Dermalogica’s Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF 50. With its medium weight consistency, it’s a winner for all skin types. This ultra-hydrating sunscreen is jam packed with antioxidants and age fighting vitamins and peptides.

Uneven skin tone and brown spots: Pure Light SPF 50 is the product of choice. It shields the skin from UV-induced hyper-pigmentation, whilst brightening peptides and exfoliating enzymes enhance skin tone and fade dark spots. Thankfully, sunscreens have come a long way in the past five years; they’re feather light, fast-absorbing and with added skin benefits. Whether it's skin cancer prevention or a desire to slow down the ageing process, sunscreen has it covered and more. It’s time to upgrade your sunscreen from the back of the bathroom cabinet and make it a daily staple product alongside your cleanser and moisturiser.

  • We answer your questions about Daily Microfoliant vs Daily Superfoliant

We have been asked many questions in relation to Daily Microfoliant and Daily Superfoliant…

    • Is Daily Superfoliant a replacement for Daily Microfoliant?
    • Is Daily Superfoliant better than Daily Microfoliant?
    • Which one should I use??

So we hope to set the record straight when it comes to these two great products.

Daily Microfoliant is a multi-award winning product and one of the most globally in-demand in the Dermalogica range. This rice-based enzyme powder microfoliates the skin and is renowned for its smoothing and brightening capabilities.

It is gentle enough to use everyday and works to remove dulling surface debris to reveal brighter, smoother skin while stimulating cell renewal for improved suppleness. It helps balance uneven pigmentation for a more even complexion.

So, when Dermalogica launched Daily Superfoliant, many people thought “Yeah! An even BETTER version of Daily Microfoliant!” Whilst it may seem similar with Dermalogica's innovative powder technology, the two products in fact have very different uses, ingredients and key benefits.

Daily Superfoliant has become extremely popular, it is a versatile product that people have fallen in love with since its launch. It is much courser in consistency than Daily Microfoliant. It exfoliates skin to help prevent premature signs of ageing due to environmental pollutants and acts as more of a resurfacer than it’s skin polishing and brightening counterpart.

Here’s a breakdown of the key benefits of both these products and how they are actually best used when complementing each other.

    Daily Microfoliant Daily Microfoliant

    Daily Microfoliant

    • Daily Microfoliant is renowned for its smoothing and brightening properties
    • The pH of Daily Microfoliant is slightly acidic which helps tighten and minimise the appearance of pores
    • The lower pH of Daily Microfoliant contains more skin brightening actives such as Phytic Acid, as well as skin-soothing Oatmeal.
    Daily Superfoliant

    Daily Superfoliant

    Daily Superfoliant

    • Daily Superfoliant resurfaces skin to help prevent premature signs of pollution-induced skin ageing.
    • The pH of Daily Superfoliant is slightly Alkaline, promoting temporary opening of pores to help cleanse and remove pollutants.
    • Daily Superfoliant contains higher levels of more skin-resurfacing enzymes, alpha-hydroxy acids and anti-pollution ingredients.

We recommend that used over alternate days or even morning and night, these two products work wonderfully and most efficiently together!

To harness the key properties of both these products, we have a Foliant-Duo Gift Set for a limited time! Every purchase over $120 will receive a Trial size duo containing Daily Microfoliant and Daily Superfoliant. While stocks last, so hurry!

    Protect yourself from the sun

We know you like to GLO all year round, but be careful when exposing yourself to too much sun. Sun exposure as we all know can prematurely cause wrinkles and age spots as well so rain, hail or shine it’s important to always wear a sunscreen!

    Exercise

There are so many benefits to exercise as we all know – it releases endorphins, increases energy, great for circulation and movement in the body which is also great for your skin! Just by getting outside and getting some fresh air and light exercise will be great for your skin.

  • What to look out for with Moles?

How often do you check your moles and skin irregularities??

Here is a great article about what to look for and how to treat skin

It is recommended to have an annual skin check, also during your treatments with us we can keep an eye out and let you know if we come across anything suspicious.

The following is form the International Dermal Institute and to read more visit dermal institute.com

Skin cancer is on the rise. In fact, more than 3.5 million cases of skin cancers are diagnosed annually in more than 2 million people. That’s roughly 1 in 5 people that will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime. But skin cancer is just the beginning; it could lead or develop into other types of cancer. Checking for skin cancer or suspicious markings should be as easy as your ABC’s, which is the exact guide skin care experts have developed for looking for visible changes on the skin.

With the advancement of technology there is a variety of tools available, such as the UMSkinCheck app available via iTunes. This app sends automatic reminders and offers step-by-step instructions for a skin self-exam. It also provides pictures of various types of skin cancers for comparison with any questionable markings on the skin you may encounter. But for those who aren’t as technologically savvy, the classic method of checking will still help.

Follow the ABCDE’s of mole detection to check for potential risks and red flags:

Asymmetrical: an irregularly shaped mole. Borders: the borders/edges of the mole are uneven. Color: the mole is multi-colored. Diameter: the mole is larger in diameter than 6mm (about the width of the top of a pencil). Evolving: the mole has changed over time. Firm: the mole is harder than surrounding tissue and doesn’t flatten if you press it. Growing: the mole is getting gradually larger.

For some there are just a few weeks left of summer; however, the prevention of skin cancer should be year round because ultraviolet (UV) rays are always present. Follow these tips for prevention and protection from UV rays:

    • Apply a teaspoon to the face and a shotglass amount to the body of a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) SPF daily (yes, everyday). Apply 30 minutes before going outside.

    • Ensure protection by wearing minimum SPF15, however SPF30 is preferable.

    • Reapply every two hours.

    • Seek shade, do not burn.

    • Exfoliate! It not only smooths and freshens skin, it helps to remove possible precancerous cells before they become dangerous.

    • Face-kinis are all the rage in Qingdao, China. This light cloth looks much like a ski mask but allows one to enjoy the water and sand without the effects of the sun, much like wearing a long-sleeved shirt.

    • Increase intake of antioxidants, fruits and vegetables. A variety of foods have been found to help minimize the attack of free-radical damage and even help protect us from the inside out. Drink moderate amounts of green tea or coffee, and consuming berries (such as blueberries, raspberries, cherries), colored peppers, red ripe tomatoes, turmeric root, and cocoa have all been found to be some of nature’s antioxidants.

There are advances in genetic testing that can be done for those with a family history to identify potential threats and incorporate a possible vaccination. One such case is the catalytic DNA molecule (DNAzyme) that looks promising in vivo efficacy in the treatment of some types of cancer.1 PD1, while still in the early stages of clinical trials, is making waves as a potential for anticancer immunotherapy.2 Increased levels of the protein Panx1 is being further studied as a potential in treating melanoma (the deadliest form of skin cancer).3 And two studies suggest that two peptide agents used either together or individually with a low-dose of a standard chemotherapy drug might offer more effective cancer therapy than current standard single-drug treatments.4

You can still enjoy your time in the sun, just remember your sun smarts and use your ABCDEFG’s when examining your skin!

  • Sun and the Dermalogica difference #spfwithbenefits

    shutterstock_139763113

As UV levels begin to increase day to day, it is so important that we protect our skin . These rays can burn our skin and potentially give us skin cancer as well as age our skin faster than anything else! Today's blog is about educating you on solar UV exposure, sun protection and how Dermalogica can really make a difference with your skin.

How does solar UV exposure change throughout the year?

Solar UV exposure changes all through the year depending on the seasons. Exposure levels are the highest in the summer months, from December to February. And they are the lowest during the winter months from May through to July. Interestingly, during Spring and Autumn solar UV exposure level can change rapidly day to day. This is why it is so important that we protect our skin using sunscreen during the day, even during Spring.

    UV Index

    Where did Sunscreen come from?

Sunscreen has been around for over 50 years. When they were originally created the purpose was to prevent sunburn. And what causes sunburn? UVB. The cosmetic industry created UVB absorbers and so people where able to apply this product and not get burnt. But, it was the UVA rays that were longer, and penetrate deeper, so people were still getting skin cancer and skin ageing because they were missing half the spectrum.

Sunscreens are not antioxidants, that is not how they work. They absorb UV energy and change it to heat energy before it causes skin problems, using chemical blockers like Oxybenzone and Avobenzone. A lot of people don't apply sunscreen correctly and they don't apply enough to the skin.

    Solar Defense Booster SPF50 (2)

What is the difference between a store bought SPF and a professional SPF?

With the Dermalogica UV Smart Booster Technology, it can actively diffuse free radicals when protection against them is needed most. The powerful vitamin complex, when formulated with sunscreens, also provides enhanced protection against UV-induced damage without the need for higher concentrations of potentially-irritating sunscreen ingredients found in products with high sun protection factors (SPF).

The Dermalogica UV Smart Booster Technology and sophisticated sunscreen formulations with skin health benefits make SPF a convenient addition to every morning routine.

Our Skin is an excellent record keeper

Every moment of exposure to daylight adds up like money ion the bank. Statistics show that one in six individuals will develop skin cancer, and 90% of these cancers are the direct results of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Even if exposure if limited to brief outdoor lunches or a 20 minute walk, cumulative exposure is enough to cause the signs of skin aging and increase the risk of skin cancer.

So, let me show you an example from a client who really needed some personalised advice and the types of things she shared with us.

The client had acne on her chin, jawline and cheeks. She used to smoke and drink but took a huge turn in her life and started living 'ultra healthy' after having children. She grew her own vegetables and cooks a lot of home meals. She used some Dermalogica products in her routine already. She experienced irritation and burning occasionally and redness and sensitivity regularly. She exfoliated daily. Her biggest concern was why after all the changes in her lifestyle, is she still experiencing breakouts? She really wanted to tackle this problem.

After this initial email, we asked a few more questions about her stress levels, we asked for a photo of her skin and what make up she wears for daily use.

    Our recommendations for her were:

Here is what our happy client said after the experience...

"Thank-you, Thank-you, Thank-you, for the skin consultation and product recommendations. For the first time since I was 21, I have no breakouts! Not one bump anywhere on my face. There are still some red marks where the pimples were but non are raised, blind blemishes. This is amazing. Thank you for the advice I'm very happy. The new Dermalogica products are definitely making a difference"  From Ali
