  • Your Number 1 Anti-Wrinkle Essential; Sunscreen!

Protect against wrinkles and sun spots with SPF Protect against wrinkles and sun spots with SPF

We’re all aware of the importance of sunscreen, especially when you live somewhere like Australia, but along with protecting against skin cancer, sunscreen is your go-to, number one, age fighter. UV rays are the biggest cause of lines and wrinkles, so it’s a no brainer that protecting against these harmful rays is your best shot at preventing against accelerated skin ageing.

So, what exactly is an SPF?

Sun protection factor (SPF) or sunscreen protects the skin from UVB rays, the kind of radiation that causes sunburn, damages skin, and can contribute to skin cancer. A broad-spectrum sunscreen however, protects from UVA rays as well as UVB, and it’s the UVA rays you really need to worry about where skin ageing is concerned. Being the longest rays in the spectrum, UVA rays penetrate to the deeper layers of the skin, causing damage to our collagen and elastin and like UVB rays, UVA rays are also linked to skin cancer. UVA is the culprit for much of our visible skin ageing; from wrinkles, sagging skin to uneven skin tone and sun spots.

In terms of your options, there are two different types of sunscreen: either a chemical or physical sunscreen. Both are equally effective, they just work differently. For example, a chemical sunscreen absorbs UV light, whilst a physical sunscreen mainly reflects it. Think of a chemical sunscreen like sponges, mopping up the UV radiation, and a physical sunscreen like a mirror, bouncing UV straight back off the skin. It really comes down to personal preference with which type you choose to use. However, those with more sensitive skins tend to prefer a physical sunscreen as they seem to tolerate the physical UV screening agents over the chemical ones.

What should I look for in my sunscreen?

Protection Sport SPF50 Protection Sport SPF50

Good sunscreens today are more than a cream with an SPF factor; they are advanced treatment products that enhance the appearance and quality of the skin. A good sunscreen should always be broad spectrum, contain antioxidants to fight free radical damage, and be free from artificial fragrance. Also look out for sunscreens that are ‘non-comedogenic’, which essentially means they won’t clog pores or cause breakouts. If you’re an oiler skin then you should definitely look for a guaranteed ‘non-comedogenic’ sunscreen, and ideally one that’s oil-free.

Board SPF protection features in multiple Dermalogica's products, from primers to moisturisers, along with standalone sunscreens, making it easy to incorporate sun protection into your regimen.

    Protection, Protection, Protection

As sunscreen is fundamental to skin health, you need to be diligent with your application. It’s a common misconception that sunscreen products are designed for use solely in the hotter months. However, given UVA rays are present at the same intensity all year round, sunscreen needs to be a daily habit.

It’s recommended applying sun screen at least 30 minutes before going outdoors, as this allows adequate time for the product to penetrate the surface of the skin. In terms of how much, Australia’s Cancer Council advise using half a teaspoon for the face and neck – including the ears and the back of the neck. For the (average) body, we need about a golf ball size amount of product or at least six teaspoonfuls. And don’t forget to reapply! Sunscreen only protects for a limited time, so slip, slop and slap it back on regularly and every two hours if your outdoors.

  • New! Sound Sleep Cocoon

There’s a serious stigma about sleep. In today’s increasingly interconnected, always-on world we view sleep as a period of idleness or lost productivity, and we try to get by on as little as possible. Most of us don’t realise that the hours we spend asleep are actually among our most constructive: While we sleep the brain recharges and cellular repair ramps up, and the benefits are huge. Certain areas of your brain work their hardest during sleep, and skin is best able to repair and regenerate itself at night. How’s that for productivity?

Now, knowing how beneficial sleep is, consider this alarming statistic: sleep problems affect health and quality of life for up to 45% of the world’s population. Just a few nights of missed sleep lead to dull skin and fine lines, and continued sleep insufficiency can result in hypertension, diabetes and a host of other issues.

Understanding the importance of active sleep and addressing chronic sleep insufficiency can seem daunting – but Dermalogica’s new Sound Sleep Cocoon is an excellent place to start. This nighttime gel-cream harnesses the power of nature with science to promote sound sleep and healthy, radiant skin. It features active ingredients that transform skin overnight by optimising nighttime skin recovery and soothing motion-activated essential oils to promote restful sleep.

    Key Benefits

Your Circadian rhythm and your skin Your Circadian rhythm and your skin.

    • Reduces signs of skin fatigue and restores vitality

    • Visibly increases radiance by morning

    • Softens and hydrates skin

    • Improves and brightens skin tone

    • Promotes deep, restful sleep for healthier-looking skin

Simply use as the last step in your nighttime skincare routine.

    Circadian rhythms and your skin

Sound Sleep Cocoon is formulated to be used at night, to work with the body’s natural circadian rhythms. Circadian rhythms are distinct periods of biological activity that occur when we’re awake and when we’re asleep, controlled by the way the body’s biological clock responds to light and dark.

    Why a night gel-cream?

Skin is nocturnal: Because the skin is in repair mode and blood flow increases at night, it's best able to absorb active ingredients while we sleep. The skin also experiences more Trans-Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL) at night – so a gel-cream formula also replenishes crucial hydration, complementing the body’s natural fluctuations. By promoting restful sleep with motion-activated encapsulated essential oils and targeting signs of skin fatigue with active ingredients, Sound Sleep Cocoon helps you make the most of your sleep.

    Key Ingredients

Australia's own Kakadu Plum Extract is a key ingredient in Dermalogica's Sound Sleep Cocoon Australia's own Kakadu Plum Extract is a key ingredient in Dermalogica's Sound Sleep Cocoon

Albizia Julibrissin Bark (Persian Silk Tree) Extract

Persian Silk Tree Extract (nicknamed the “night sleeper” because its leaves open in sunlight and close at night) provides overnight antioxidant protection and fights free radicals. It reduces signs of fatigue such as skin slackening while brightening and plumping tired skin. It also helps to fight Advanced Glycation End-products (AGEs), which can contribute to wrinkles, loss of elasticity, irritation and ageing.

Evodia Rutaecarpa (Fruits of Wu-Zhu-Yu) Fruit Extract

Used widely in traditional Chinese medicine, Wu-Zu-Yu promotes a more refined, even skin texture. It also aids in illuminating dull skin, visibly increasing skin’s radiance by morning.

    Kakadu Plum Extract

Native to northern Australia, Kakadu Plum is a potent form of Vitamin C – and a powerful weapon against free radical-induced skin damage and premature ageing. It’s noted for its unique combination of hydrophilic (water-soluble) and lipophilic (oil-soluble) antioxidants, which are highly bio-available to the skin and deliver comprehensive antioxidant protection while improving luminosity and skin tone.

    Tamarindus Indicia (Tamarind Seed) Extract

This naturally occurring polysaccharide has a chemical structure similar to hyaluronic acid. It reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and helps protect skin’s barrier function, promoting the skin’s natural hydration process while increasing smoothness and softness

    Motion-Activated Essential Oils

Lavandin Oil is encapsulated in motion-activated biodegradable polymeric microcapsules that allow it to be released throughout the night as you toss and turn – promoting deep, restful sleep. Additional calming essential oils soothe the senses to encourage sound sleep for healthier-looking skin.

  • NEW! UltraCalming Duo

Powerfully Soothing for Sensitive Skin: NEW UltraCalming Duo

Sensitive skin means something different to everyone. Some interpret it as mild, occasional flare ups, while others have redness and discomfort so intense they may find it hard to leave the house. Sensitivity affects every skin type, from dry to oily – and causes vary from genetics to triggers like stress, diet, cosmetic ingredients, allergies and pollution.

With so many variables, what causes your sensitive skin can be tough to pinpoint – and even tougher to avoid. Dermalogica’s new UltraCalming Duo takes the guesswork out of the equation by treating the top three concerns of everyone who has sensitive skin: redness, irritation and dehydration.

Both products combine the best of nature’s botanical extracts with innovation from The International Dermal Institute to powerfully soothe skin sensitivity. Whether you have mild sensitivity or super sensitive skin, the UltraCalming Duo is your ultimate skincare solution.

These products can be layered for maximum results, or used separately to address a specific concern. Best of all, they help to defend against future flare-ups – so your skin looks and feels healthier continuously.

  • Your Skin's Barrier Function Explained

It is one of best part of Great Wall named Mutianyu where is about 70km from Beijing, China.

You might not be able to see it from the moon nor with the naked eye, but one of the greatest walls ever built is that of the Barrier Function of the skin. This amazing feat of skin engineering means we have a strong, resilient ‘wall’ protecting our body from harsh environmental elements, helping to retain moisture and keeping and allergens out. The barrier function is designed in the same manner as that of a wall, consisting of:

    • The bricks: the dead, dry skin cells which are soon to be shed
    • The mortar: composed of lipids (ceramides, essential fatty acids and cholesterol)

Sometimes the structure of this ‘brick wall’ is compromised and gaps can appear due to the lack of epidermal barrier lipids. As a result, our skin is susceptible to dehydration due to moisture escaping (Trans Epidermal Moisture Loss), and increased skin sensitivity as microbes and allergens now have a path of entry into the skin. There are many causes for the breakdown of this protective barrier, the most common being:

    • The environment e.g. cold, windy weather, aircon, heating, the sun, plane travel
    • Poor skin care e.g. using harsh, stripping products like SD alcohol or soap, excessive exfoliation, water that is too hot, or not wearing a moisturiser
    • Diet e.g. excess alcohol, caffeine and salt consumption, not eating sufficient Essential Fatty Acids, insufficient water intake
    • Stress itself can disturb the barrier function by slowing down synthesis of epidermal lipids
    • Excessive sweating
    • Smoking
    • Certain medications (such as nasal decongestants), general anaesthetic, cancer therapies

An impaired Barrier Function means the skin appears dull and lacklustre. It can feel taught and flaky with fine lines are around the eyes, over the forehead and cheeks. When pinched between the fingers, it will resemble a piece of parchment paper. Sadly, the Barrier Function declines with age as oil gland activity decreases, the skin’s natural hydrators decline as does its ability to regenerate these important lipids.

The prolonged dehydration in the lower level of the skin can cause the depletion of the dermal tissue resulting in deeper wrinkles, elastosis and sagging skin. There is a lot one can do to re-establish a good Barrier Function, such as:

Exfoliation. This step is important to prevent the skin from feeling dry, rough and flaky and it will help eradicate any dry patches. The key is not to use an aggressive exfoliant that causes any skin sensitivity or irritation. I’d recommend exfoliating boosters that are easily applied under the moisturiser and work gently throughout the day. There are also slightly stronger forms of exfoliations such as Hydroxy Acid which can generally be used once or twice a week.

To boost the moisture and regain the plumpness in the skin, apply layers of a hydrating serum, toner, moisturiser and primer (the skin responds well to layering). The moisturiser doesn’t need to be heavy or contain a lot of oil (as the skin is lacking moisture, not oil). I’d recommend a medium weight moisturiser with SPF30+.

If the skin is tight and flaky, use an anhydrous (water free) moisturiser made with skin protecting silicones. This will seal in moisture and prevents the skin from drying out, whilst also helping to repair the Barrier Function.

At night, look at applying an oil based serum or night oil to the areas of dry skin. For an added boost, apply a hydrating gel mask once a week, ensuring it’s applied close the corners of the nose, mouth and eyes to target these vulnerable areas.

Though drinking water is important, it doesn’t correlate directly to having hydrated skin. It’s better to encompass products that hydrate the skin and protect your barrier function by preventing moisture loss.

    Some fantastic ingredients which I’d recommend to use within your entire skin care regimen are;

    • Hyaluronic Acid: one of my favourite ingredients as it has the ability to hold 1000 times its own weight in moisture.
    • Niacinamide: a potent form of vitamin B-3 with a multifunctional approach to treating dehydration. It addresses several aspects of dryness and dehydration simultaneously, thus protecting the skin from Trans Epidermal Moisture Loss.
    • Essential Fatty Acids: Evening Primrose Oil, Borage Seed Oil, Shea Butter, Jojoba Oil, Coconut Oil, a great ingredient to combat dry skin is Betaglucan.
    • Omega-6 EFAs: required in forming the skin’s barrier function and its structural integrity
    • Sodium PCA: a terrific humectant which binds moisture to the skin
    • Salicornia Extract: a plant extract that helps reinforce the NMF
    • Algae Extract: nutrient rich to restore skin’s moisture
    • Tomato Seed Oil: a great source of lycopene-rich lipids that help restore the barrier lipids of the skin
    • Bambusa (Bamboo) Vulgaris and Pisum Sativum (Pea): help stimulate Hyaluronic formation for increased hydration and elasticity
    • Glucosamine: helps stimulate Hyaluronic formation It’s important to avoid soap and soap based cleansers and body washes as the alkalinity dries the skin and causes sensitisation. I’d also recommend avoiding S.D Alcohol and hot water as both are very drying to the skin.

And finally, don’t forget to feed your skin by including plenty of Essential Fatty Acids in your diet!

  • Meghan Markle’s Favourite Skincare Ingredient

Meghan Markle is a fan of Australian Tea Tree Oil Meghan Markle is a fan of Australian Tea Tree Oil

We’re all on the look out for a wonder product that helps alleviate a multitude of skin issues.  So when The Sydney Morning Herald quoted 36-year-old former Suits actress and soon to be member of the Royal Family, Meghan Markle from her interview with Allure magazine back in 2014 about her love of Tea Tree Oil we were thrilled!  This powerful ingredient deserves a bit of publicity and, like Meghan, we love it too!

Derived from the leaves of Queensland and NSW's Melaleuca Alternifolia Myrtle Tree species, Tea Tree is anti-inflammatory, a natural antiseptic and is found to treat everything from acne, dermatitis and skin irritations to congestion in the skin.

Meghan said it’s the the one thing she simply cannot live without when travelling. "It's not the most glamorous thing, but if you get a mosquito bite, a small breakout, no matter what it is, it's my little cure-all. It's inexpensive, it's small enough to carry on, and I bring it with me all the time."

Dermalogica have used Tea Tree in their products for many years for the incredible skin benefits. If you’d like to try this awesome ingredient for yourself, check out our comprehensive list of Dermalogica products that contain Tea Tree - there’s something for everyone!

  • Why You Need SPF Everyday - Not Just at the Beach...

Did you know that two in three Australians are diagnosed with skin cancer by age 70? And that more than 2,000 people in Australia die from skin cancer each year?

The Cancer Council estimates that Australia spends more than $1 billion per year treating skin cancer but with some key protection methods we can prevent most skin cancers!

Most of us will remember the Slip, Slop, Slap message from years past... but now, coming up to National Skin Cancer Action Week, Australians of all ages are urged to  always use the five forms of sun protection. These are to:

SLIP on sun-protective clothing SLOP on SPF30 (or higher) broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen SLAP on a broad-brimmed hat SEEK shade SLIDE on UV protective sunglasses.

A combination of these measures, along with getting to know your skin and regularly checking for any changes, are the keys to reducing your skin cancer risk. For many Australians, applying daily sun protection is still not a ritual, even though there has been endless education and a plethora of products on the market.

Here, Ellie Douglas - Dermalogica Training Specialist helps us navigate the different SPF products available and discusses the importance of shielding against UV rays every day, not just when we're at the beach!

Busting the myth on sunscreen It’s a common misconception that sun protection factor (SPF) products are designed for use solely in the summer or hotter months. When the sun’s not beaming brightly, our sunscreen retires to the back of our bathroom cabinet, only to make its next appearance with the swimwear and sun hats, and by then it may have expired.

In reality, UVA rays are present at the same intensity all year round. Being the longest rays in the spectrum, they penetrate to the deeper layers of the skin causing damage to our collagen and elastin. UVA is the culprit for much of our visible skin ageing in the form of wrinkles, sagging skin, uneven skin tone and sun spots. Other signs of damage are the appearance of small blood vessels and spider veins on the face, neck and chest.

Don’t get a false sense of security when sitting in doors or when the weather is a dull, as UVA can penetrate unfiltered glass including some car windows. And don’t count on the clouds to protect you, as UVA is still active on cloudy days. They say, “prevention is better than cure”, and this phrase couldn’t be more fitting when talking about wearing sun protection. A daily dose of an SPF 30 - 50+ should be your number one product priority, to not only protect the skin, but prevent against the signs of premature ageing.

Out with greasy, in with invisible! There are some highly sophisticated sunscreen technologies available today. No longer do we have to be afraid of our SPF. It doesn’t have to feel greasy and suffocating on our skin. Not all sunscreens will clog the pores and cause breakouts and congestion. In fact, with the advances in some sunscreens today, you won’t even know that you’re wearing one. And as a bonus, your chosen sunscreen can even help firm, mattify and brighten your skin, depending on your individual skin goals and challenges.

Dermalogica uses two advanced technologies in its sunscreen formulations, making our fear of sunscreen a thing of the past…Let me introduce you to oleosomes and UV smart booster technology. Oleosomes are tiny moisturising bubbles that can be loaded with SPF. The result is a sunscreen that allows for increased SPF activity whilst using fewer chemical sunscreens and is therefore less likely to cause skin sensitivity. What’s more, these moisture rich oleosomes deliver a feather light, wearable consistency. Effective protection from harmful UV rays is a two pronged approach. Firstly, the rays must be either absorbed with chemical sun screens or reflected with physical sun screens. Secondly, the skin will benefit hugely from having a good dose of antioxidants to fight free radical damage caused by exposure to UV rays.

Dermalogica’s UV smart booster technology provides a fresh dose of encapsulated vitamins which are cleverly released only when they encounter UV rays. Once you’ve found a sunscreen that you’re happy with, the next part is applying it correctly.

Here are Ellie's top tips for optimum protection: - Apply ideally 30 minutes prior to sun exposure. - The Cancer Council of Australia’s guide to applying sun screen is half a teaspoon for the face, ears and front and back of neck. - Reapply your sunscreen every two hours. - Don’t forget bald heads, thinning scalps, the chest, arms and hands - they all need protecting too!

Selecting a sunscreen for your skin type and lifestyle Many of Dermalogica’s sunscreens are built into a moisturiser, so if you’re time poor these make a good option - just pick out one that’s best suited to your skin. But if you already love your daytime moisturiser, then consider a product like Solar Defense Booster SPF 50, this innovative sunscreen allows you to add a few drops to your moisturiser or even your foundation and get the protection you require.

Reactive and sensitive skin: Choose a physical sunscreen such as the Super Sensitive Shield SPF 30. This 2 in 1 moisturiser, formulated with natural mineral sunscreens, contains oat and botanical actives to help minimise any skin irritation.

Oily skin and breakouts: Use a medicated, oil free treatment moisturiser with an SPF 30+. We recommend Oil Free Matte SPF 30 from the MediBac Clearing system.

Fine line and wrinkles: It has to be Dermalogica’s Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF 50. With its medium weight consistency, it’s a winner for all skin types. This ultra-hydrating sunscreen is jam packed with antioxidants and age fighting vitamins and peptides.

Uneven skin tone and brown spots: Pure Light SPF 50 is the product of choice. It shields the skin from UV-induced hyper-pigmentation, whilst brightening peptides and exfoliating enzymes enhance skin tone and fade dark spots. Thankfully, sunscreens have come a long way in the past five years; they’re feather light, fast-absorbing and with added skin benefits. Whether it's skin cancer prevention or a desire to slow down the ageing process, sunscreen has it covered and more. It’s time to upgrade your sunscreen from the back of the bathroom cabinet and make it a daily staple product alongside your cleanser and moisturiser.

19-25th November 2017 is National Skin Cancer Action Week.
